Subject: MS student opportunity - Modeling and simulation of ash transport in the atmosphere

Dear Volcano list-serve Maintainers :

I’d like to post the request below to your list-serve, but so far, the server
has rejected the request because of an attached signature file.  I have turned off
the automatic inclusion of a signature file (the signature below is cut and paste
from a text file) and so am not sure what the problem is.

Can you please post this for me?

Thank you,

Donna Calhoun

MS student opportunity - Modeling and simulation of ash transport in the atmosphere
Department of Mathematics, Boise State University
Prof. Donna Calhoun
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am seeking a student for NSF-funded Master's degree work on
simulating the transport of airborne volcanic ash and tephra
deposition during volcanic eruptions.  The goal of the project is to
develop a parallel, adaptive, Eulerian, finite volume, code that can
model ash transport over the entire sphere.  The code will be based on
an existing model, Ash3d, developed at the USGS Cascade Volcanic
Observatory (Vancouver, WA).

The potential student will work with the Applied and Computational
Mathematics research group at Boise State University and the
developers of ForestClaw (http://www.forestclaw.org), a parallel,
adaptive finite volume code.  This student will also have the
opportunity to work closely members of the Department of Geosciences
Volcanology Research Group at Boise State University, as well as the
developers of the Ash3d code at the USGS.

This is an excellent opportunity to work with the dynamic group of
applied mathematicians and geoscientists at BSU and the USGS, as well
as to gain technical proficiency in high performance computing in an
important area of geophysics research.

Desired qualifications
-----------------------

* An undergraduate degree in mathematics, applied mathematics,
computer science, geosciences, physics, engineering or related fields.

* Coursework in multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, differential
equations, numerical analysis and at least one advanced course in
 scientific computing.

* An interest in numerical model development and geophysics applications,
as demonstrated through coursework, internships, or undergraduate
 research, and so on.

* Experience and demonstrated enthusiasm for parallel software
development and programming in C, C++, and Fortran is a bonus.

The position will provide two years of funding, and includes tuition,
health benefits, and a competitive research stipend.  It is expected
that within the two years, the student will complete all requirements
to earn a Master's degree (including coursework and Master's Thesis)
in the Department of Mathematics at BSU.

For more information, please contact Donna Calhoun (donnacalhoun@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx).

Deadline for application is February 1.
