Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite your contributions to the IAVCEI session VS16 Mechanisms of Volcanic Ash Generation: From Lab to Field, at the 2015 IUGG General Assembly in Prague (22 June – 2 July, 2015)

Session Description:
Recent eruptions in Iceland and elsewhere have highlighted the need to constrain further the fragmentation mechanisms that generate volcanic ash, and their effects on the resulting size distributions and shapes of erupted pyroclasts. In particular, the role of bubbles, crystals and external water in the fragmentation process are still not fully understood. The subject of magma fragmentation and ash generation is an active field of research in both physical and experimental volcanology: while experimental studies provide opportunities to observe fragmentation processes in detail, insights gained from studies of deposits are needed to relate these observations back to natural volcanic systems and to reconstruct eruptive sequences. In this symposium, we aim to bring together insights gained from both the lab and the field regarding the processes of magma fragmentation and ash generation, and to encourage greater inter-collaboration. Contributions related to the role of bubbles and/or crystals in controlling how and when fragmentation occurs are particularly welcomed.

Invited keynote presentations:
Raffaello Cioni (University of Florence, Italy), Bettina Scheu (LMU Munich, Germany)

We look forward to seeing you in Prague!

Sincerely,

Emma Liu (emma.liu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Julia Eychenne (julia.eychenne@xxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Kathy Cashman (glkvc@xxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Alison Rust (alison.rust@xxxxxxxxxxxxx)
