Dear colleagues,

We are seeking enthusiastic M.Sc. and Ph.D. students to participate in a 3 year research project investigating the processes of "crustal growth, destruction and recycling in the Mexican Convergent Margin". Successful candidates are expected to conduct extensive field work along the Mexican pacific coast and in selected volcanoes of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Students will also take advantage of our state-of the-art geochemical and microanalytic facilities for obtaining in situ U-Pb and U-Th ages + trace element and Hf isotopes in zircons, as well as for applying conventional approaches for major, trace and isotopic analysis on rocks and minerals. Specific questions regarding juvenile mantle inputs, subduction erosion, crustal recycling, delamination and relamination tectonics will be explored.
Ph.D. applicants must hold a diploma/master degree or demonstrate research skills through publications. A college degree or its equivalent is required for M.S. candidates. Education in any field of Earth Sciences is preferred but not required. Applicants must feel comfortable working outdoors in sometimes challenging environments, and must be willing to acquire strong laboratory skills during the project. Spanish proficiency is not required for acceptance but should be acquired.
Students will be based at the Centro de Geociencias, in the Querétaro, México (http://www.geociencias.unam.mx/geociencias/index.html), a vibrant research and educational department that belongs to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (http://www.unam.mx/). Economic support is available on a competitive basis through UNAM and the Mexican National Science Council (http://www.geociencias.unam.mx/geociencias/posgrado/indice.html).
