Ph.D. and M.S. opportunities in volcanology at the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)

Applications are invited from highly motivated and academically strong students to participate on two externally funded projects:

(1) Utilizing observations and models of precursory deformation during volcanic crises

We are seeking excellent Ph.D. and M.S. students to participate on a project utilizing geodetic observations and cutting edge finite element models to develop a volcano forecasting method. Specifically, the goals of this work are to link geodynamic magma chamber evolution models with geodetic observations from GPS and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) to assess the eruption potential of volcanoes exhibiting unrest. Objectives also include the assimilation of seismic data and of gas measurements, and the implementation of the finite element modeling approaches on scalable, high-performance computing platforms. This project is part of a broader effort to develop an operational methodology for eruption prediction using current and future SAR missions with short revisiting times.

This joint project with the University of Miami is funded by NASA and will commence August 2015.

(2) Field and modeling investigations of submarine seamount formation in the central Pacific

We are seeking excellent Ph.D. and M.S. level students to investigate submarine volcanism at seamounts that form near mid-ocean ridge axes and transform faults. Funding has been awarded to conduct a 30-day field expedition to 8° 20’N Seamount Chain west of the East Pacific Rise. In addition to a full geophysical survey and dredging program, the AUV Alvin will be utilized for 15 dives to sample and map discrete lava flows. Students involved with this project will participate on the cruise (likely early 2016) and use the collected data for their dissertation work. Student projects include, but are not limited to, 3D geodynamic models of seamount formation and melt migration, and geophysical data collection and analyses.

This joint project with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Inst. and the University of Florida is funded by NSF and will commence August 2015.

More information about the above and other projects can be found at: http://www.geology.illinois.edu/~pgregg or by contacting Dr. Patricia Gregg (pgregg@xxxxxxxxxxxx).

Applicants to the graduate program in the Dept. of Geology at UIUC should have a B.S. or M.S. in Geology/Geophysics, Physics, Engineering or a related field. Completed applications, including transcripts and GRE scores, should be submitted electronically by midnight EST on January 15, 2015 for admission August 2015, at: http://www.grad.illinois.edu/admissions/apply

Geology and Geophysics at the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign (http://www.geology.illinois.edu):

The Department of Geology at the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) has recently expanded with new hires in the fields of ecology, paleoclimatology, hydrology, thermal chronology, and two hires in the field of Geodynamics. Given the outstanding computational resources at UIUC, including the Blue Waters Super Computer - the fastest academic computer in the world, the UIUC Geophysics and Geodynamics Group is committed to becoming a leading center for geodynamics and computational data analysis. Graduate students at UIUC benefit from excellent financial support including departmental endowments for research and travel. In addition to the externally funded projects listed above, several departmental fellowships and assistantships are available for students wishing to pursue Ph.D. or M.S. degrees on other topics beginning Fall 2015. Recent graduates from the UIUC Geology Graduate Program have gone on to careers in the petroleum and environmental industries as well as tenure-track positions at universities including Caltech, U of Oregon, and U of Miami. More information about graduate studies in geology and geophysics at UIUC can be found here: http://www.geology.illinois.edu/grad/
