We seek an excellent and highly motivated student for the following PhD project:
“Investigation of diffusive fractionation of chemical elements during chaotic mixing of magmas”
Department of Physics and Geology, University of Perugia, Italy
Supervisor: Diego Perugini
The project is focused on the study of the compositional variability triggered by magma mixing in volcanic plumbing systems before/during the onset of explosive volcanic eruptions. The project will combine fieldwork, electron microprobe and LA-ICP-MS microanalysis, chaotic mixing experiments performed with natural silicate melts, and numerical models to build a chronometer for estimating the time-scales of volcanic eruptions.
The PhD project is offered as part of the European Research Council (ERC) funded Consolidator Grant 2013 project CHRONOS (a geochemical clock to measure timescales of volcanic eruptions).
