Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Volatile Cycles at Subduction Zones

Contacts: Jon Davidson <j.p.davidson@xxxxxxxxxxxx> and Tamsin Mather <Tamsin.Mather@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

University of Oxford, Department of Earth Sciences, South Parks Road, Oxford & University of Durham, Department of Earth Sciences, Science Labs, Durham

This 4 to 5-year PDRA forms a critical component of the 5-year consortium project; “Mantle volatiles: processes, reservoirs and fluxes” funded primarily by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The aim of this component of the project is to analyse volatile contents in primitive volcanic rocks from Kamchatka and Southern Chile in order to further our understanding of volatile recycling at subduction zones.

This PDRA will run for 4-5 years (depending on start date and salary level). The Researcher will split their time between research sites at Oxford and Durham, primarily supervised by Profs Tamsin Mather (Oxford) and Jon Davidson (Durham). Our expectation is that the Researcher will spend a minimum of 2 years at Oxford and 2 years at Durham but these arrangements will be negotiated with the successful candidate. Fieldwork in Kamchatka/Chile and analytical work at other sites such as Edinburgh will be coordinated and scheduled as appropriate.

Amongst other duties detailed in the job description, the successful candidate will be expected to collate and coordinate existing literature and sample collections and identify targets for volatile analysis, collaborate in the development of S isotope measurement techniques, collaborate in the writing of proposals for time on appropriate beam lines at the Diamond Light Source synchrotron, analyse major elements for identified targets, and address any unforeseen scientific and numerical challenges during the project.

Candidates should have completed a PhD in a relevant area before starting the post, have a good level of numeracy, excellent written and oral communication skills, team working and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment while being able to problem solve independently.

The deadline for applications is midday on *Monday 15 September 2014*. Interviews will take place on *Thursday 2 October 2014*.
