Dear colleagues,
We welcome
contributions to our Fall 2014 AGU session "Outstanding challenges in
the seismological study of volcanic processes," sponsored by Seismology
and co-sponsored by Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology.
Session Description (ID 3927):
The field
of volcano seismology is at a major turning point in its development.
Once constrained by limited observations, researchers now have access to
multiple high-quality data sets from eruptions around the world. Such
data sets are beginning to facilitate comparative studies within
volcanic arcs and between eruptive centers worldwide. As the field moves
forward, strategic deployments of a small number of seismometers, or
small-n arrays, and mining of existing data from key eruptions using
cutting-edge volcano seismological techniques will make way for Large-N
arrays with dense spatial sampling. In this session, we aim to bring
together the best of all three worlds to address outstanding challenges
in volcano seismology, including source versus path effects, source
processes of long period seismicity, and structural imaging of volcanic
interiors. We particularly encourage submissions that will motivate and
guide a community-based Large-N seismic deployment at an active volcano
in the near future.
Confirmed invited speakers:
Florent Brenguier, Institut des Sciences de la Terre
Helena Buurman, University of Alaska Fairbanks
Jonathan Lees, University of North Carolina
Robin Matoza, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Please remember the abstract submission deadline is August 6, 2014.
Sincerely,
Diana Roman, Carnegie Institution of Washington
Matt Haney, Alaska Volcano Observatory
Stephanie Prejean, Alaska Volcano Observatory
Rick Aster, Colorado State University
