Dear Colleagues,

I'd like to call your attention to the pre-meeting "Volcano Seismo-acoustics Practicum Workshop", which will be held just prior to the Yogyakarta Cities on Volcanoes 8 meeting.  The 1.5 day workshop will take place on September 7th (afternoon only) and on September 8th (full day).  Registration is available by contacting jeffreybjohnson@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx and expressing your intent to participate on one or both days.  Please note that it is NOT necessary to participate on both days and that workshop costs are now FREE thanks to support from the IAVCEI/IASPEI volcano seismology commission.

Both days' activities will take place at the Gadjah Mada University Club Hotel & Convention Center, which is in close proximity to the conference venue.  A description of the schedule and instructors follows:

September 7th (afternoon only; tea/coffee breaks provided; capacity 80) - Six 30-minute lectures will be given at an introductory level focused on volcano seismology and infrasound.  Both scientific objectives and monitoring applications will be stressed.  Observatory staff, students, and non-specialists in seismology and infrasound are particularly encouraged to participate on this day.

September 8th (all day; lunch and tea/coffee breaks provided; capacity 40) - Participants will separate in to (small) breakout groups of 8 and rotate through practical seismic and infrasound exercises together with instructors.  Groups will encourage hands-on processing and analysis of data using a variety of software.  Data and analytical tools will be provided to participants.  Relevant topics may include: 1) characterization of volcano seismic events, 2) RSAM, SSAM, reduced displacement, and spectrograms, 2) broadband versus short period seismology and signal restitution, 3) principal component and array analyses, 4) infrasound signal filtering and classification, 5) infrasound waveform analyses, and 6) infrasound array processing.

Workshop instructors will include
- David Fee from University of Alaska Fairbanks, USA (infrasound)
- Jeffrey Johnson from Boise State University, USA (infrasound)
- Robin Matoza from Scripps UCSD, USA (infrasound)
- Wendy McCausland from USGS, USA (seismology)
- Jean-Philippe Metaxian from University of Savoie, France (seismology)
- Jurgen Neuberg from University of Leeds, UK (seismology)
- Greg Waite from Michigan Technological University, USA (seismology)

Please respond to jeffreybjohnson@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx with your interest and note that space is limited (especially on September 8th).  Registration will be on a first come first served basis in the order that emails are received.
