Dear colleagues,

we seek a highly-motivated, post-graduate or PhD student candidate for a three-years research project in volcanology within the EU Marie Curie Initial Training Network VERTIGO (www.vertigo-itn.eu).

Deadline for the application is  27 June 2014.

The project, titled ‘Field-based study of volcanic ash via visible and thermal high-speed imaging of explosive eruptions’, aims to understand and quantify the processes controlling the injection of volcanic ash into the atmosphere during explosive volcanic eruptions. Volcanic ash is injected into the atmosphere mixed with pressurized gases and larger pyroclasts. The initial physical/chemical properties of this mixture control the dispersal and deposition of the ash as well as its interaction with the environment. Due to the limited access and their highly dynamic nature, exit conditions are usually inferred from deposits and models. The successful candidate will overcome these limitations by deploying synchronised high-speed and thermal camcorders and acoustic sensors to small-scale, approachable explosions at Stromboli, Etna, or other active volcanoes. The acquired information on mixture exit velocity, temperature and content of large particles will provide the ground for numerical and experimental modelling of ash dispersion, particle aggregation and particle/gas/atmosphere interactions, to be performed during secondments at other VERTIGO partner institutions. Supervisor: J. Taddeucci (INGV); co-sopervisors: S. Ciolli (DPC) and B. Scheu (LMU).

The successful candidate will work at the HP-HT Laboratory for Experimental Geophysics and Volcanology (HP-HT Lab http://roma1.rm.ingv.it/laboratori/laboratorio-hp-ht) of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia in Rome (Italy), a stimulating, active working environment with scientists from Europe and worldwide covering a broad range of Earth Sciences.

Candidates from any nation may apply. However, they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their future host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. Eligible applicants must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research career, counted from the diploma that gives the rights to embark in a doctoral degree, have not yet obtained a PhD at the time of application, and should be proficient in English and demonstrate great written/oral skills. Note that PhD students do qualify as candidates. Also, a three-year PhD can be obtained from an Italian university pending a competition. The VERTIGO network is an Equal Opportunity educator and employer committed to recruiting, supporting and fostering a diverse community of outstanding students. All applicants who share this goal are encouraged to apply. We strongly encourage the application of women.

Applications MUST be received by 27 June 2014.

To apply, please:

1) send me (jacopo.taddeucci@xxxxxxx) a single PDF including your CV, a research statement, an academic transcript and contact information for 2 referees. The research statement should include a description of undergraduate research projects/studies undertaken as well as research interests for the future.

2) Go to the following link
