PhD position in experimental petrology at Leibniz University of Hannover

” EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE PRODUCTION OF RHYOLITES FROM BASALTIC SOURCES IN THE BIMODAL SNAKE RIVER PLAIN-YELLOWSTONE PROVINCE”

A PhD position in experimental petrology/geochemistry is open at the Institute of Mineralogy, Leibniz University of Hannover. The research project consists of complementary investigations of (1) natural core samples recovered during Hotspot drilling project (http://snakeriver.icdp-online.org) and (2) an extensive experimental work to determine whether the origin of A-type rhyolites in Snake River Plain Yellowstone province is best explained by fractional crystallization, silicate liquid immiscibility or partial melting in the crust.
The experimental expertise at the Institute for Mineralogy with high pressure – high temperature techniques will be combined with analytical work (e.g. microprobe, infrared spectroscopy, Laser ablation ICP-MS). Precondition for the application is (1) a diploma or master degree in geosciences and (2) a strong background in igneous petrology and geochemistry. We are looking for a person with a strong commitment to research and experience in laboratory and analytical work. The PhD student will work in the research group at Experimental Lab of the Institute of Mineralogy, and will be integrated in national and international collaborative research efforts. The position is funded for 24 months (with an extension for the 3d year) by German Science Foundation (DFG) within the priority research program ICDP (International Continental Drilling Program).

Supervisors: Dr. Renat Almeev, Dr. Bernard Charlier, Dr. Olivier Namur and Prof. Francois Holtz

To apply, send your application as a single PDF file to Bernard Charlier (b.charlier@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx). Application should include cover letter, CV, grades, certificates, summary of the Diploma or M.Sc. thesis, contact information for 2 referees, list of publications (if available). To ensure consideration, submit application by August 31, 2014. The review process will proceed until the position is filled.
