New monitoring network installed at Chaparrastique volcano, El Salvador, by the V-EMER TASK FORCE of INGV in cooperation with MARN - Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales.
Dear colleague,
We would like to inform you that a new monitoring network has been installed and is now operative at Chaparrastique Volcano, El Salvador. The network is composed by five broadband seismic stations, 3 infrasonic microphones, 1 thermal camera, 1 DOAS and 1 multi-gas geochemical station for the measurement of SO 2 and CO 2 fluxes, respectively, 2 radiometers, and 10 GPS stations. This network complements the one already existing on the volcano and installed by the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (MARN).
The new network has been installed by the V-Emer (Volcano Emergency) Italian Task Force of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) during a successful 10 days campaign in El Salvador, and is run by the volcanologists of MARN. INGV has responded to a support request by the Government of El Salvador, following the eruption of the volcano Chaparrastique started on December 29th, 2013.
The V-Emer Task Force includes staff of different INGV departments covering multiple tasks and expertise, supervised by the director of the INGV Volcanoes Division Paolo Papale. The emergency intervention task was led by Piergiorgio Scarlato and involved A. Bonforte, A. La Spina, M. Liuzzo, G.Giuffrida, S. Rapisarda, G. Salerno, in cooperation with the colleagues in El Salvador Celina Kattan, Eduardo Gutierrez, Manuel Diaz, Demetrio Escobar, and other members of the Local Environmental Observatory of MARN.
