Dear volcanophiles,
We would like to draw your attention to the following session to be held at the Cities on Volcanoes 8 meeting in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (September 9-13, 2014):
(2.IV.A) A volcano in your daily commute: Understanding persistently active volcanoes and their hazards
Conveners: Loÿc Vanderkluysen, Chelsea Allison, Agung Harijoko
While many of the iconic eruptions of the last century were the result of a sudden reawakening of an otherwise “quiet” volcano, volcanic activity is not always confined to single large events. Significant risk comes from volcanoes that erupt in a continuous or recurrent manner, as is the case in our host city. Though their activity may often be regarded as lower in intensity, they do pose a constant threat to the populations living around them, and the incorporation of eruptive patterns in daily routines only makes for a greater risk.
In this session, we welcome studies that address the broad subject of continuous or cyclic activity, regardless of eruptive style, with particular emphasis on:
• Ground-based and satellite monitoring of persistently active volcanoes
• Experimental or computer modeling data
• Quantitative risk assessment studies
• Risk management case studies at persistently active volcanoes
• Studies on the environmental, social and/or economic impacts of long-lasting eruptions
• Multidisciplinary studies incorporating several of the aforementioned topics
The abstract submission deadline is Monday 14th April 2014. Full details can be found on http://www.citiesonvolcanoes8.com
