Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the following session to be held at the Cities on Volcanoes 8 meeting in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (9 - 13 Sept 2014):

"Agriculture and Rural Communities in Volcanic Crises – Impacts on Crops and Livestock and Strategies for Crisis and Recovery Management"

Convenors: Sylviane L.G. Lebon (University of Iceland, Reykjavik, Iceland), Christina Magill (Macquarie University, NSW, Australia) and Thomas Wilson (University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand)

Agriculture is not only vital to the subsistence of rural populations but also to a country's ability to support the needs of its entire population. In most volcanically active countries, agriculture is a dominant economic activity as potential fertilising effects of volcanic ash and other volcanic products on soils generally lead to greater crop/fodder productivity.
This session is approaching the interaction volcanoes-agriculture from a sectoral perspective rather than from the individual disciplines. It is calling for submissions from soil and water scientists, agriculture specialists, economists and/or social scientists working on the topic of interaction volcanoes and agriculture.

The abstract submission deadline is Monday, April 14, 2014. Full details can be found on http://www.citiesonvolcanoes8.com.
