COV8 - intra-meeting workshop

Tourism & Volcanoes: Risk Management – Health & Safety Issues in Volcanic
Environments

Conveners: Dr Patricia J Erfurt-Cooper, Dr Deanne Bird, Dr Henry Gaudru
Place : Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta

Description:

This workshop is designed to raise awareness about risk perceptions and
visitor safety  at volcanic geosites. The workshop will begin with an
overview of current geosites, their recent activity, attractions for
tourists and risk mitigation strategies that are in place. Updated
information and statistics on accidents in volcanic tourist destinations
will also be covered.

The workshop will then invite participants to discuss their knowledge,
experience and  concerns with current best-practice initiatives for
volcanic risk management within tourist areas. Participants will be
encouraged to bring any relevant material, including tourist  hazard and
awareness information brochures and website information, etc. from their
own experiences and localities so the workshop as a group can critique
their relevance, usefulness and accuracy. Group discussions will also be
welcomed on the value of guide books (e.g. Rough Guide, Lonely Planet) in
informing tourists about the vulnerabilities of volcanic areas and in
providing useful information to reduce risk. Participants will be asked to
share their experiences encouraging these forms of media to uptake
scientific research and recommendations. Other areas of focus will include:

# The use and implication of new technologies for disseminating hazard and
risk information  to tourists visiting volcanic regions. Discussions on the
use of social media (e.g. Geosites with a Facebook page or Twitter account
to update followers on current activity or to promote sustainable use of
parks) will be encouraged, in addition to experiences with location-based
emergency messaging to mobile phones.

# Calls for suggestions on how to upgrade safety standards at volcanic
destinations as well as prior to travel (e.g. more different languages,
visual signage)

# Discussions of different levels of ‘potential danger status’ in volcanic
National Parks, World  Heritage sites as well as National and Global
Geoparks

# The launch of a new book about aspects of Volcano Tourism including Risk
Management  (currently in preparation) Interested participants are invited
to submit a short summary on their knowledge, experience and/or concerns
regarding volcanic risk management within the tourism sector for discussion
in the workshop session

Number of Participants : 40
Cost : Free
