Dear Volcano List,

We invite contributions to Goldschmidt 2014 Session 12a: Crystallization Histories vs. Eruption Histories: What do Geospeedometry and Geochronology Tell Us?

Keynote presentation: Blair Schoene, Princeton University
Invited presentation:  Fidel Costa, Earth Observatory of Singapore

Recent increases in analytical capabilities (spatial resolution and/or precision of analyses) have produced a wealth of exciting data at the crystal and sub-crystal scale. In particular, geochronology and geospeedometry based on diffusion of trace elements through crystals have greatly increased our ability to extract information about timing and the thermochemical conditions of magma storage and mobilization in volcanic and plutonic systems. For example, data sets are emerging integrating phase equilibria and timescales with links to geochronology and trace-element or isotopic information. This session aims to bring together researchers working on geochronology and geospeedometry in magmatic systems in order to explore how geochronology and geothermometry can focus together to illuminate the durations of processes such as magma residence at high and low temperatures, thermal cycling in subvolcanic intrusions, as well as reheating and remobilization prior to eruption. We welcome submissions using varied techniques in geochronology (e.g., SIMS or MC-ICPMS U-series or U-Pb dating, high-precision ID-TIMS U-Pb dating, Ar/Ar and U-Th/He dating) and geospeedometry (e.g., diffusion studies, kinetics of crystal growth or inclusion faceting) and particularly welcome submissions that bridge observations using different analytical and petrologic approaches.

Conveners: Jorge Vazquez, Kari Cooper

Abstract deadline is February 8th, 2014: http://goldschmidt.info/2014/abstractsInfo
