The Observatory of Volcanology and Seismology of Costa Rica (OVSICORI-UNA) is pleased to inform you that thanks to OFDA (USAID) and the technicians of the institute, the first web camera has been installed at Poás volcano and is available for the public on the webpage of the observatory:
http://www.ovsicori.una.ac.cr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=109&Itemid=104

This webcam shows the north view with the hot acidic lake in the foreground and the north flank of the active criptodome in the background. It corresponds to the opposite view of the National Park visitors.

The lake of Poás currently presents a temperature between 45 and 50°C and a pH around 0, sometimes negative. The temperature of the fumaroles of the dome are around 400°C these days and were above 500°C in May 2013 and above 800°C in 2011. Since 2006, the lake of Poás presents sporadic phreatic eruptions (geyser type) several times per month, most of time just a few meters and sometimes up to 500m high (last one of this amplitude on October 27th, 2012). More information can be found on the monthly bulletins of the institute:

Because of vandalism in the area, we encourage the volcanophiles to take advantage of the webcam without any delay... The best chance to have a clear view is 12-15h GMT (6-9am local time) or 0-3h GMT (sunset local time), and all day during dry season (coming soon).
