NSF FUNDING FOR:

ONE POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER AT UC SANTA BARBARA (Two years), with Professor Cathy Busby (cathy@xxxxxxxxxxxx)

ONE MASTER’S DEGREE STUDENT (Petrology/geochemistry) AT WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY (Two years), with Professor Sue DeBari (debari@xxxxxxxxxxxx)

Cretaceous Alisitos Oceanic Arc (Baja California, Mexico): An outstanding field analog to the Izu Bonin arc

The Rosario segment of the Cretaceous Alisitos arc in Baja California is an outstanding field analog for the Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) arc, which is under intense study by IODP. The Rosario segment is structurally intact, unmetamorphosed, and has superior three-dimensional exposures of an upper- to middle-crustal section through an extensional oceanic arc. Previous mapping of this 60-km-long segment of the Alisitos arc, done in the 1990’s (Busby et al., 2006, JVGR), will provide a framework for the proposed study; however, that study focused mainly on field descriptions of the volcanic rocks, with limited geochronology, and no geochemistry. The proposed study will determine in detail the relationships between plutonic, hypabyssal, and volcanic rocks, using field, geochemical, and geochronological data. These data will be used to construct an “Island Arc Crust Virtual Field Model” to be used by scientists as a reference model for IBM drilling outcomes. This collaborative research project will interface closely with  IODP Expeditions 350-352 (in 2014) and a fourth ambitious proposal to drill to the arc middle crust (IODP Proposal 698 at site IBM-4, awaiting scheduling). A field workshop in the Alisitos arc, ideally held in conjunction with IODP 350-352 post-expedition meetings and before drilling to the middle crust at site IBM-4 begins, will provide invaluable context for IBM drilling participants. The postdoctoral researcher will ideally also be involved in the IBM-4 drilling.

STARTING DATE: August or September 2014

REQUIREMENTS: Candidates for both the MS position and the postdoctoral position must have demonstrated ability to do physically demanding fieldwork, with long cross-country traverses over rugged desert mountains and canyons.

Candidates for the postdoctoral position must hold the PhD before the appointment begins, must be highly experienced in field mapping and Arc GIS, and should have prior experience with volcanic and plutonic rocks (igneous petrology and geochemistry). Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated ability to publish results (with one or more first-author journal publications).

Candidates for the MS degree position must have a BS in Earth Science with a GPA> 3.3, satisfactory GRE scores, and classic undergraduate geologic training (optical mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, and field camp or independent field mapping).
