PhD opportunity in submarine volcanology at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Please be advised of an opportunity for a highly motivated and academically strong student to work on NSF-funded projects investigating the dynamics of submarine basaltic eruptions. The project will focus on using syn-eruptive CO2 degassing and vesiculation in mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) to evaluate eruption dynamics and, by extension, CO2 flux form the global mid-ocean ridge system. The project will be supervised by Adam Soule (http://www.whoi.edu/people/ssoule), with potential co-supervision by J. Gardner (UT Austin), M. Kurz (WHOI), and D. Wanless (Boise State U).

The PhD project may include any or all of the following: geochemical and textural analyses of MORB glasses erupted at depths of 1800-3500 m.b.s.l.; noble gas geochemistry of MORB; laboratory decompression experiments using natural MORB glasses; numerical modeling of degassing and vesiculation processes; and interpretation of seafloor imagery (multibeam bathymetry, sidescan sonar, photography) collected by deep-submergence vehicles. Field areas include Axial Volcano on the Juan de Fuca Ridge and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 15˚N, to which a 2015 research cruise is planned.

Students with interest in conducting laboratory work, geochemical/textural analyses, and sea-going field work to investigate physical volcanology and geochemistry in submarine volcanic systems are encouraged to apply to the WHOI/MIT Joint Program (http://mit.whoi.edu). Applicants should have a B.S. or M.S. degree in Geology or a closely related field. Experience with igneous petrology/geochemistry, GIS, Matlab is helpful, but not essential.

For more information contact Dr. Adam Soule (ssoule@xxxxxxxx).
