Dear all,

Apologies for duplicate posting. Applications close end of the month...

Outstanding BSc (Hons) or MSc graduates are invited to apply for a PhD
studentship in igneous geochemistry and volcanic hazard assessment
offered by the Volcanic Risk Solutions Research Group within the
Institute of Agriculture and Environment, Massey University, New Zealand.

The aim of the project is to test a number of different recent models
of arc andesite petrogenesis through the study of samples from the
southern Taupo Volcanic Zone. Here, the opportunity exists to resolve
the fundamental question whether mantle source or crustal controls on
arc magma compositions dominate in subduction zones, and how
petrogenetic processes may control magma ascent and eruption
triggering. The result of this study will therefore have significant
implications for volcanic hazard assessment.

The selected candidate will be integrated into an active research
group with focus on volcanic hazards and how geochemical methods can
contribute to their assessment. The student will have access to a
range of geochemical facilities and equipment at Massey's Turitea
campus in Palmerston North and - through collaborative agreements -
elsewhere in New Zealand and overseas.

Further information about the research undertaken by the Massey group,
see:
http://volcanic.massey.ac.nz/
http://www.massey.ac.nz/massey/learning/colleges/college-of-sciences/research/agriculture-environment-research/soil-earth-sciences/volcanology.cfm

The studentship stipend is about NZ$ 25k per year. Deadline for
applications is November 30, 2013, with an anticipated start date in
February 2014.

For further information, and to apply, contact Georg Zellmer
(g.f.zellmer@xxxxxxxxxxxx). Applications should include a detailed
resume, a list of publications, and contact details of 3 or more
professional referees. The appointment will be made on basis of merit.
