Dear colleagues,

some may already have heard of it, here a somewhat more official announcement:
http://www.en.mineralogie.geowissenschaften.uni-muenchen.de/aktuelles/eu_vertigo/index.html
A EU-funded ITN (Initial Training Network) will start on 1 January 2014 (duration 48 months) and offer training-through-research to 13 ESRs (Early Stage Researchers) at nine host institutions, in collaboration with 11 partner institutions.
The VERTIGO Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) (VOLCANIC ASH: FIELD, EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF PROCESSES DURING ITS LIFECYCLE) will be trained in the physical processes during explosive eruptions, the physico-chemical processes in the eruption plume and the atmosphere, numerical approaches to understand volcanic processes and identify the impact of volcanic ash on various aspects of today’s and future life. Additionally, ESRs will gain insights into how the private sector or other potential future employers (e.g., volcano observatories, civil protection, volcanic ash advisory centres) respond to volcanic ash related questions.

The VERTIGO homepage will go online in fall 2013. All positions will be advertised officially in early 2014 on http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess/, the VERTIGO homepage as well as locally at the hosting institutes. All positions are funded for 36 months.

Employment requirements:

  • “Scientific age”: Early-Stage Researchers must (at the time of recruitment by the host organisation) be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.
  • Mobility: at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. As far as international European interest organisations or international organisations are concerned, this rule does not apply to the hosting of eligible researchers. However, the appointed researcher must not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment at the host organisation.
  • The recruitment of each individual Early-Stage Researcher will be supported for a minimum of 3 months and up to a maximum of 3 years.
  • Good written and oral knowledge of English BEFORE starting the contract (TOEFL test or equivalent required).
