Joseph D. Devine III Obituary

It is with deep sadness that I advise of the passing of Dr. Joseph (Joe) Driscoll Devine III on Sunday 28th July after a brief illness.  Joe will be remembered, by all who knew and worked with him, as a very dedicated and meticulous scientist, with a deep interest in using his science to ensure that vulnerable communities were made safer.  He came to science as a more mature student, after a career in the U.S. Naval Service. Joe was an extremely proud veteran of the submarine service of the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War era as a fire control technician, aboard the USS Dace, SSN 607, based in Groton, Connecticut, making numerous international voyages aboard the Dace as part of his service.  He remained a skilled life-long sailor, with an abiding love of all the oceans of the world, with a particular love of nature, especially his beloved wild birds.  He received his B.A. from the University of Connecticut and his Ph.D., in oceanography, from the University of Rhode Island.  Joe worked most of his professional life as a petrologist, volcanologist and seismologist with a special focus on volcanic areas in Africa, particularly in Cameroon; he also worked on systems in the Lesser Antilles arc. His career spanned some 30 years as a senior research associate at the Electron Microprobe Laboratory at the Department of Geological Sciences, at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.   Much of his recent research work was on the Soufrière Hills volcano in Montserrat.  A significant portion of his research also involved the submarine Kick-‘em-Jenny volcano, off the north coast of Grenada, in the Lesser Antilles arc.  Befitting his ties to the sea, He will be buried at sea after a Mass of Christian burial on Monday, 5th August, in Mystic, Connecticut, with his ashes to be spread at sea.  The community has lost a valuable asset and he will be deeply missed.  He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Kathleen, his daughter, Jaime and son, Joseph Devine IV, step-daughter, Caitlin, son- and daughter-in-law, eight grand-children, friends and colleagues around the World.  May he rest in peace.
