AGU VGP on Twitter

Dear Colleagues,
The Volcanology,
Geochemistry and Petrology section of AGU has recently started a Twitter
account (@AGUvgp) to help disseminate information about VGP and to
reach out to both the scientific community and general public about the
exciting things happening in the fields that VGP covers. After only a
few days, we already have 112 followers on Twitter. Speaking from my
personal experience, Twitter is a surprisingly effective way to get
people interested in your or others research or publications (even when
you have only 140 characters to do it) and one very effective method is
to have people tweeting about what they are seeing/hearing at meetings
like AGU, GSA, IAVCEI, Goldschmidt and more.
To
that end, we are looking for volunteers -- faculty, researchers and
graduate students -- who might be interesting in tweeting while at some
of these upcoming meetings, especially the IAVCEI Scientific Assembly
starting next week and the Goldschmidt Conference in late August. It is
quick and easy, especially if you have the Twitter app on your laptop or
phone. If you're interesting in tweeting via the official AGU VGP
account, email me (klemettie@xxxxxxxxxxx).
If
you just want to tweet about the meeting, use the hashtag #iavcei2013
or #gs13 so I can find them and retweet them through the AGU VGP
account. Even if you aren't on Twitter, you can read about what is going
on by looking at the website for the AGU VGP account: http://www.twitter.com/AGUvgp
This
is part of a new push from VGP to have greater public outreach for
research and accomplishments, something that is becoming vitally
important in this new age of funding. If you're interested in discussing
outreach via social media, we will likely be holding a meeting at the
AGU Fall Meeting to gather ideas and people for the cause -- please
contact me so I can add you to the list.
Cheers,
Erik Klemetti
