Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to consider submitting an abstract to Fall AGU session V024, “Magma rheology in experiment and nature”.

Section/Focus Group: Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology (V)
Co-Sponsors: European Geosciences Union (EGU), Mineral and Rock Physics (MR), Natural Hazards (NH), Planetary Sciences (P)

Melt viscosity and multiphase magma rheology exert fundamental controls on magma ascent, emplacement or eruption on Earth and other planets. Recent advances highlight the importance of thorough sample characterization (e.g. crystal shape and size distributions) and reveal dramatic changes in behavior depending on many variables such as temperature, stress regime, crystallinity, vesicularity, water content, etc. The session will revolve around two main themes: (i) to compare rheological data using different materials and techniques, to elucidate the effect of individual variables, and (ii) application of rheological studies to modeling magma dynamics, from magma chamber to conduit to lava flow.

Confirmed invited speakers:
Hidemi Ishibashi – Shizuoka University, Shizuoka, Japan
Einat Lev – Columbia University, New York, USA
Craig Magee – Imperial College, London, UK
Alessadro Vona – Roma Tre University, Rome, Italy

Regards,

V024 Session Conveners
Benoit Cordonnier, Mattia Pistone, Francesco Vetere and Alan Whittington
