FUTUREVOLC is a 26-partner project funded by FP7 Environment Programme of the European Commission, addressing topic “Long-term monitoring experiment in geologically active regions of Europe prone to natural hazards: the Supersite concept”. The project started October 1st, 2012 and has duration of 3.5 years. The project is led by University of Iceland together with the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
See:  http://www.futurevolc.hi.is

A postdoc position is open within the volcano deformation team of the FUTUREVOLC.  The position is at the Nordic Volcanological Center, Institute of Earth Sciences at University of Iceland. The candidate will work together with the crustal deformation team of the Institute of Earth Sciences and its collaborators, with the aim of conducting up-to-date assessment and evaluation of volcano deformation in Iceland, mostly utilizing combined GPS and InSAR observations. The FUTUREVOLC deformation team aims for rapid analyses and interpretation of observed deformation signals, and closer inspection of past deformation at Icelandic volcanoes, put in context of magmatic processes.
The position is open for two years initially, with start day on September 1st, 2013.

The position requires geoscience and computing experience, and is open for persons holding Ph.D. degree in geoscience and engineering or those who are in the final phase of completing a Ph.D. Preference is for those with training in geophysics with experience of InSAR or GPS analysis of deformation, and the search for best fitting models of observed signals. The candidate will have 2/3 of time devoted to volcano deformation research, but 1/3 to the general management of the FUTUREVOLC project, under the leadership of Freysteinn Sigmundsson and in collaboration with the management team of the project. For further information, contact Freysteinn Sigmundsson (fs@xxxxx).

Application should be sent to Freysteinn Sigmundsson (fs@xxxxx) who also can give further information.  Application material should include: i) A cover letter, explaining their motivation for the post, ii) a curriculum vitae, iii) academic transcripts, and iv) names of two potential referees

Application deadline is 23 July 2013.

Salary for the position of a postdoc will be according to the current collective wage and salary agreement between the relevant union and the Minister of Finance.

Appointments to the University of Iceland do take into account the Equal Rights Project of the University of Iceland.
University of Iceland was established in 1911. The university is structured into 5 academic schools, and 25 faculties. The Institute of Earth Sciences is a part of the Science Institute that belongs to the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences. Researchers at the school cooperate with cutting edge researchers at principal universities around the globe. Faculty and staff at the school is around 200 people. Strong emphasis is on good work conditions and career development.
