AGU Fall 2013 Session V044: Understanding Hawaiian and Strombolian Eruptions

Dear Colleagues,

Please consider submitting your work to our multidisciplinary AGU session on Hawaiian and Strombolian styles of volcanic activity, description below.

Basaltic melts exhibit a rich diversity of eruptive behaviours. Defined explosive styles include sustained Hawaiian fountains, and discrete Strombolian explosions. Within the classifications however, it is now apparent that there is a spectrum of activity with regard to discharge rate, erupted mass, duration, and deposit characteristics. Our understanding of how these eruptions are triggered, and what drives them, has evolved markedly in recent years. Our enhanced understanding is a consequence of detailed studies of deposits, petrology, geophysical signals, and simulations in the laboratory and on computers. We invite contributions from all these and other disciplines addressing the mechanisms of Hawaiian and Strombolian eruptions.

Sincerely,
Marie Edmonds
