IVHHN, in association with IAVCEI, USGS, CaV and GNS Science, is proud to announce publication of a new Protocol for volcanic ash leachate analyses. The peer-reviewed Protocol document was the outcome of a two-day workshop held at the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience, Durham University, UK, in 2011. A 2005 review of ash-leachate studies (Witham et al., 2005), which made preliminary recommendations on standard methods for characterising ash leachates, was used as the starting point for discussions at this workshop.

The purpose of this Protocol is to recommend clear, standard and reliable methods for the rapid assessment of hazards from leachable elements, each applicable to specific purposes. The four applications considered here are:

·         A ‘general purpose’ water leach, relevant to assessing impacts on drinking water supplies, livestock drinking water and fish hatcheries, and availability of soluble elements for plant uptake

·         Assessing ingestion hazards to livestock

·         Assessing ingestion hazards to humans

·         Assessing inhalation hazards to humans

The Protocol document can be downloaded from www.ivhhn.org and we hope that it will be widely used for future analyses, to aid comparison amongst different studies at different volcanoes. We aim to publish a wider commentary on the protocols in a volcanology journal, soon.

For those attending the IAVCEI conference, Carol Stewart will be giving a talk on the Protocol in session 4F: Responding to volcanic health hazards and volcanic ash impacts, mitigation and warning.

Best wishes,

Claire Horwell & Carol Stewart
