Postdoctoral research associate position in volcano remote sensing at Michigan Technological University:

Applications are invited for a full-time NASA-funded postdoctoral associate position in the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences (GMES) at Michigan Tech. The primary duty of the postdoctoral associate will be to analyze and interpret measurements of volcanic gas emissions using a suite of NASA satellite instruments. A specific long-term goal is to develop a new multi-decadal climatology of volcanic sulfur dioxide emissions using satellite measurements.

Candidates must have completed a PhD in volcanology, atmospheric science or a related field and show a commitment to publication of research results. Experience with satellite retrievals of trace gases, computer programming and analysis of satellite datasets using IDL and/or Matlab are highly desirable. Funding for this position is available immediately, initially for one year, with possible extension for up to five years contingent on performance and continued grant support. Funding for travel to conferences and/or to visit other project team members is also available.

Interested candidates should submit a CV (including publication list), statement of research interests and the names and contact details for three references to Simon Carn (scarn@xxxxxxx).

Michigan Tech is located in Houghton, MI on the southern shore of Lake Superior, the largest and most pristine of the Great Lakes. The region boasts excellent skiing, cycling, kayaking and wilderness activities, and cost of living is low. The GMES department hosts one of the largest graduate volcanology programs in the US. PhD programs are offered in Geology, Geological Engineering, and Atmospheric Sciences. Interested candidates can learn more about the department programs, courses, and research and find contact information for faculty at geo.mtu.edu.

Michigan Technological University is an Equal Opportunity Educational Institution/Equal Opportunity Employer.
