Kelby Hicks 1982 – 2013
It is with great sadness that we must report the recent loss of a talented young
volcanologist who died suddenly of natural causes while carrying out fieldwork on Volcán
de Colima, Mexico.
Born in the USA, Kelby was working on a PhD at Cambridge University and participating in a
recently-funded NERC urgency grant. He lived in the UK with his wife, Anna, also a
volcanologist. He adored fieldwork and his resourcefulness, initiative, unselfishness and
common-sense would often save the day. He had worked in Chile, Vanuatu and Hawaii as
well as Mexico. He was a great story-teller and drew on a wealth of experiences including
his time spent as a river guide in West Virginia. His ability to see the funny side of even the
most challenging circumstances was renowned.
He touched many people with his kindness, humour and dedication to advancing
knowledge of the mechanisms that control volcanic eruptions. He was particularly
motivated by the desire to improve capabilities for forecasting large eruptions. His last
days were spent doing what he loved: working on the flanks of an active volcano, making
observations and measuring gas emissions.
Our community has lost a young scientist who had so much yet to contribute to volcanology. Those of us who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him will always remember him with great fondness.
