OSOP is pleased to announce a Workshop on Seismic Metadata, Instrument Calibration and Response Files

Date: Sunday, October 13th to Friday, October 18th, 2013
Location: OSOP, Volcan Baru, Panamá
Registration Deadline: July 15, 2013. The course is limited to 8 participants, so Sign up NOW!.
Cost: 499.99 USD (includes housing, ice breaker, coffee, snacks, a power dinner and RUMBA. Transportation not included) 749.99 after registration deadline.

What is OSOP?
OSOP develops, supports, installs, maintains and configures instrumentation and software for early warning civil defense systems to mitigate the effects of natural disasters.

Workshop Description
Two of seismology’s dirty secrets are instrument calibration and the generation of instrument response files. For most seismologists these areas are black magic. In this workshop strip away the magic and provide you with the knowledge needed to tackle these problems on your own. In this course we will train you in the calibration of seismic equipment using OSOP’s shake table and by step-function using a calibration table like the one seen here: OSOP Calibration Table. Lectures on Poles and Zeros will be based on Frank Scherbaum’s “Of Poles and Zeros”. Upon leaving Panama, you will be able to generate your RESP and pz formatted instrument response files from dataless and all of these files from a list of gains, poles and zeros. In the course we will use rdseed, SEISAN (resp & presp), PQLX, JPlotResp, PDCC and OSOP’s proprietary software packages.

Day 1: Introduction to Instrument Response and Transfer functions
Day 2: Generating RESP and pz formatted instument response files from dataless: rdseed, PDCC
Plotting instrument response files: SEISAN (presp) and JPlotRESP
Day 3: Instrument Calibration: Shake Table
Day 4: Instrument Calibration: Step Function
Day 5: Generating RESP, pz, and dataless response files from the raw numbers: PDCC, SEISAN (resp)
Day 6: The day to day use of instrument response files in seismic observatories: PQLX, Earthworm, Seisan and SeisComP | Q&A Session

This course is targeted at people who need to maintain different seismological software, technicians who install field equipment and need to maintain response databases for seismic networks as well as those who design instrumentation.

- Lectures will be given in English
- Certificates will be given in conjunction with the University of Panama.
- Formal invitations from the University of Panama are available upon request.
- Instructors: Branden Christensen, MSc and Angel Rodriguez, MSc.
- OSOP can help with transportation arrangements.

Course participation is limited to 8 so Sign up NOW!
