Masters in Volcanology and Geological Hazards at Lancaster University, UK
From: Hugh Tuffen <h.tuffen@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

This Masters (MSc) course, which runs for one year or two years
part-time, provides training for future volcanologists amongst one of
largest groups of volcanologists and environmental scientists in the UK.
Taught modules cover volcanic processes from theoretical,
laboratory-based and field perspectives, together with other geological
and environmental hazards. Fieldwork includes a highly popular trip to
Etna, and visits to fascinating Ordovician volcanic rocks
in the nearby English Lake District. We offer a wide range of optional
modules
<http://www.lec.lancs.ac.uk/postgraduate/masters/courses/volcanology-and-geological-hazards> including Geoinformatics, Environmental
Management, Flood Forecasting and Isotope Geochemistry.
All MSc students can carry out a substantial volcano-related research
project in collaboration with one of the many internationally-recognized
geoscience experts in the Lancaster Environment Centre
<http://www.lec.lancs.ac.uk/research/environmental_geosciences/>. Our areas of research expertise include subglacial eruptions in Iceland, basaltic lava flow
emplacement, ash generation and transport, conduit flow processes,
magma degassing and remote sensing. Research facilities include a
dedicated lab for analogue modelling of volcanic processes, a dedicated
thermal analysis lab for high-temperature experimentation and
characterization, plus x-ray tomography and a wide
range of geochemical analytical tools including infra-red spectroscopy
and ICP-MS.
The MSc is designed to attract students from a wide range of backgrounds
(including Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, Physics,
Chemistry and Maths) and is ideal preparation for PhD studies or a wide
range of environmental jobs. Lancaster<http://www.lancs.ac.uk/about-us/rankings-and-reputation/>
is one of Britain's top teaching and research universities,
consistently ranked amongst the leading universities in the UK. The
historic city<http://www.lums.lancs.ac.uk/about/area/>
is
located close to the Lake District National Park and has good travel
connections to Manchester and London. Applications from UK and overseas
students are equally welcomed.
