Dear all,

please find enclosed the announcement for two PhD/post-doc positions at GFZ Potsdam (Germany) with the following focus:
- Analog modelling of dike injections
- Seismicity induced by fluids in volcanic and non-volcanic environments and the mechanics of the interaction between faults and fluids or fluid-filled fractures

Best regards

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association. Within the framework of the ERC Starting Grant project CCMP-POMPEI (Physics of Magma Propagation and Emplacement: a multi-methodological Investigation), Department 2 "Physics of the Earth", Section 2.1, invites applications for a Post-Doc Position (m/f)
to investigate the nucleation, propagation and arrest of magma-filled dikes and sill intrusions in the Earth's crust through analog laboratory experiments involving fluid injections in gelatin.
Tasks:
• Coordinate the experimental activities of the project,
• Contribute setting up the experimental equipment,
• Organise in detail the individual experiments,
• Lead the team during the video recordings,
• Analyse the experimental data,
• Perform numerical models for the theoretical understanding of the experimental results,
• Present the experimental work at international conferences and publish the results in
international scientific journals.
Qualifications:
• PhD in Physics, Geophysics, Geodesy, Geology or related disciplines
• Good mathematical and physical background
• Good programming skills (Python, Matlab, Fortran or C/C++)
• Good English skills
• Experience in analog modelling or in volcano and rift tectonics is of advantage
• Willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary environment and to travel to
collaboration partners
Start: as soon as possible
Duration: 2 years
Salary: EG 13 TVöD-O
Contact:  Dr. E. Rivalta (rivalta@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
Application Deadline: Evaluation begins 2 weeks after the announcement of the position (7 Feb 2013) and continues until position is filled.
Equal opportunity is part of our personnel policy. The GFZ encourages applications from qualified female candidates. There is a kindergarten service available. Handicapped applicants will be given preference in the case of equal qualifications.
Please submit your application (a resume, letter of research interest, list of publication, and the names and addresses of three references), stating the above given code number to:

to investigate the seismicity induced by fluids in volcanic and non-volcanic environments and the mechanics of the interaction between faults and fluids or fluid-filled fractures.
Tasks:
The selected candidate will analyze seismic data from the Pollino range, Southern Italy, and compare the findings with results from other hydrothermal/volcanic swarm areas. Next, the successful candidate will develop numerical models on the interplay between ascending fluids/ fluid-filled cracks and faulting/fracturing in volcanic and tectonic environments. Close collaboration with national and international partners is expected.
Qualifications:
• Master of Sciences or equivalent in Physics, Geophysics or related disciplines. In order to get the position as a Post-Doc, a PhD in Physics or Geophysics is required.
• Strong mathematical, physical and programming background (Fortran, Matlab, Python or C/C++)
• Good English skills
• Experience in seismology or in physical modelling of seismic or volcanic processes is of advantage • Willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary environment and to travel to
