In an exciting opportunity to join the internationally renowned Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC), we wish to appoint excellent research active staff with a vision and ambition to address the global 'grand challenges' facing our planet and society. LEC is an interdisciplinary community of ~450 researchers and is delivering research and teaching with impact across the natural and social sciences. We work nationally and internationally with a host of academic, government and private sector partners. We are open to a broad spectrum of research perspectives and encourage candidates to propose how their distinctive expertise might contribute to our agenda.
This post will focus on improving the understanding of sub-surface fluid flow and reactive transport that is essential to a wide range of issues in environmental science. It will build on the wealth of existing joint expertise in LEC and BGS, particularly in geological, geophysical, geochemical and hydrological processes. Relevant areas of interest include the long term implications on the fate of fissile material and radio nuclide transport; super-critical fluids as in carbon capture and storage; understanding changes in nutrient inputs and their interactions in relation to long-term water quality; contaminated land and remediation; urban and mine drainage; and microbiological transformation of contaminants. Research in these key areas might be centred, for example, around the development, parameterisation and application of process-based modelling techniques, and new developments in the computation (and communication) of risk associated with particular subsurface geophysical and geochemical processes (e.g. related to shale gas).
This new joint appointment between LEC and BGS will contribute to the development and expansion of research interests aligned with the Science Programmes within BGS (e.g. Energy, Climate Change, Marine Geoscience, Earth Hazards and Systems, and Groundwater) and research interests in LEC. This will build on our current activities focussing on the impact of physical and chemical processes in the sub-surface environment (e.g. nutrient transport in catchments, chemical interactions in soils and plant-soil-water interactions, stable isotope and radioisotope tracers for land-water exchange, microbiological mechanisms in soils that influence contaminant mobility, fluid-solid interactions in volcanic systems). LEC has strong traditions/expertise in and facilities for the quantitative sciences, and the post holder may benefit from exploiting existing expertise in modelling uncertainty and data assimilation techniques as we strive to improve our subsurface process understanding and the predictability of subsurface state changes.
