We are very happy to announce the second IUGG-WMO workshop on "Ash dispersal forecast and civil aviation" that will take place at the Geneva headquarters of the World Meteorological Organization on 18-20 November 2013. Our preliminary website is at: http://www.unige.ch/sciences/terre/mineral/CERG/Workshop2.html. In particular, this second workshop will focus on the following objectives:

1. To review and institutionalize the interaction between meteorological, atmospheric, volcanological, modelling and remote sensing communities
2. To document scientific and operational progress from the 1st meeting
3. To identify best practice modelling strategies to support operational implementation
4. To identify and develop concepts to address current challenges

The first IUGG-WMO workshop that took place in Geneva on 18-20 October 2010 promoted stronger interactions between the volcanological and the operational forecasting communities and the resulting outcomes served as a "road-map" for on-going research (see for example the consensual document, documents describing main dispersal models and main ash detection techniques and the document describing the benchmark exercise for model comparison; http://www.unige.ch/sciences/terre/mineral/CERG/Workshop/results.html). We expect the outcomes of the second meeting to facilitate further collaborations and help join the effort towards improved forecasting strategies.

The workshop will consist of a series of selected keynote talks and thematic break-out sessions to facilitate open discussion. If you are interested in participating and presenting a poster, please download the form at: http://www.unige.ch/sciences/terre/mineral/CERG/Workshop2/Application.html , and send a completed application to the Organizing Committee (email: ashworkshop2013@xxxxxxxxx) by 18 March 2013. Twenty people will be selected based on the affinities with the workshop objectives (registration is free, but both travel and accommodation will have to be covered and organized by participants). Only people presenting a poster will be selected.

Best Regards,

The Organizing Committee
