Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the "Real-time volcano hazard assessment” session of the 2013 IAVCEI General Assembly, to be held in Kagoshima, Japan, July 20-24.

Session 4-3c Real-time volcano hazard assessment

Recent advances in volcano monitoring enable eruption forecast to some extent; however, forecasting eruption style and scale still remains a challenge in disaster mitigation planning. Under this circumstance, development of "Real-time Volcano Hazard Assessment" that assesses hazards in the near future based on current observations and monitoring signals is critical for risk mitigation. To establish "Real-time Volcano Hazard Assessment", a wide range of skills and methods is needed including database preparation and management, numerical simulation techniques of eruption plume, lava flow, pyroclastic flow, debris flow and debris avalanche, probabilistic methods to quantify the associated uncertainties affecting the volcano system, effective techniques to make decisions by governments and residents easier, and underlying sociological and psychological knowledge. In this session we invite specific contributions and broad reviews related to these topics. Contributions on pure volcanology related to these topics and specific examples on past and present eruption crisis are also encouraged.

Conveners

Shinji Takarada (Geological Survey of Japan, AIST)

Kazutaka Mannen (Hot Springs Research Insitute of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan)

Augusto Neri (INGV, Italy)

Chuck Connor (Univ. South Florida, USA)

Hisashi Sasaki (Asia Air Survey, Japan)

Yujiro Suzuki (ERI, Univ. Tokyo, Japan)

Abstracts are due January 31 2013, and can be submitted via http://www.iavcei2013.com/abstract_submission/abstract_submission.html

We look forward to seeing you in Kagoshima.
