We would like to draw your attention to the "Monogenetic Volcanoes" IAVCEI session during the IAVCEI 2013 Kagoshima meeting. The session is sponsored by the IAVCEI Commission on Monogenetic Volcanism (https://vhub.org/groups/iavcei_cmv). We encourage submissions to this session in all aspects of monogenetic volcanism.
3-2. Monogenetic volcanoes
Small volcanoes, whether cones, rings or maars, are often called "monogenetic", but some have been revealed by closer study to have had histories of multiple eruption – although most are still believed to be truly monogenetic. Small volcanoes are commonly found as clusters (fields), which are a consequence of dispersed plumbing systems feeding discrete batches of magma to the Earth's surface.
The apparent "simplicity" of these volcanoes (one magma batch, one eruption, etc.) is replaced by a definite level of complexity when individual volcanoes, volcanic complexes, or volcanic fields are studied in greater detail. For example, by studying small phreatomagmatic volcanoes, we can document changing eruptive styles with time during some eruptions, in terms of intensity, level of interaction with external water, magma chemistry, etc. It is not entirely clear what controls this changing eruptive style, as a long list of variables can be proposed. Turning to scoria cones, some open questions include the role of explosion frequency in the transition between Strombolian and violent Strombolian stages of activity, and the interplay between vesiculation, groundmass crystallization, and degassing in controlling explosion style.
This symposium invites contributions related to the processes associated with small volcanoes and their hazards. Focused topics include: magma generation and collection in intraplate settings, magma source characteristics, ascent rates and plumbing geometries, magma storage and evolution during ascent, volatile contents and degassing, controls on magmatic and phreatomagmatic eruptive styles, the geomorphic _expression_ and degradation processes associated with monogenetic volcanoes, spatial-temporal controls on location and timing of monogenetic events, and hazard and risk assessments for monogenetic volcanic fields.
