The Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) seeks applicants for a 75% time Research Assistant Professor position in support of the department’s analytical facilities, including a Nu Instruments multi-collector-ICP-MS (http://www.geo.utep.edu/pub/jasper/ceeir/), a Cameca SX-50 electron microprobe (http://academics.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=39200), and a Perkin-Elmer 5300 ICP-OES. Responsibilities will include maintenance, repair and operation of the department’s major analytical equipment and other equipment as appropriate; training and supervision of both internal and external users; and participation in research projects. In addition, seeking of extramural support for collaborative or independent research projects is strongly encouraged, and an additional 25% salary may be raised. In support of such projects, the candidate will have access to the department’s laboratories as well as instrumentation to support an active research progr
 am.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The position requires a PhD and extensive experience with major research instrumentation. In addition, good communication skills are essential to interact with users with a range in skill levels.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES: The Department of Geological Sciences at UTEP has a faculty of 17, 69 graduate students, and 143 undergraduate students. The department is housed in an attractive, 90,000 sq. ft. building that contains faculty and student offices, laboratory and classroom space with research infrastructure that includes wet chemical laboratories, a clean room, and a variety of analytical instrumentation.
