Apologies in advance for multiple postings

PhD opportunity in experimental studies of basaltic lava flows at the University of Missouri

One or two highly motivated and academically strong graduate student(s) are needed to work on NSF- and NASA-funded projects studying the rheology and thermal history of crystallizing basaltic lavas in the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Missouri-Columbia.

Laboratory facilities at MU include high temperature muffle furnaces for sample synthesis; parallel plate and concentric cylinder viscometers allowing viscosity measurement over 12 orders of magnitude; Setaram mHTC96 high temperature drop calorimeter, allowing heat capacity and relative enthalpy determination to 1400˚C; Perkin Elmer DSC8500, allowing rapid differential scanning calorimetric studies up to 750˚C and ultrafast quenching. Many additional facilities are available
on the MU campus and at nearby institutions.

The projects will also involve fieldwork at active basaltic volcanoes (in central America and elsewhere), and visits to other institutions for complementary studies. PhD students are encouraged to complete a Minor in College Teaching.

Applicants should have a B.S. or M.S. degree in geology or a closely related field such as physics, chemistry, materials science or engineering. Previous high-temperature laboratory experience would be helpful but is not essential. For further information, please contact Dr Alan Whittington (whittingtona@xxxxxxxxxxxx). Further details about the department and available facilities may be found at http://geology.missouri.edu/

Interested potential applicants are encouraged to meet with me at the Fall AGU meeting in San Francisco.
