Dear colleague,

We seek a highly motivated candidate for athree-years PhD research position in the frame of the FP7 Marie Curie InitialTraining Network “NEMOH: Numerical, Experimental and Stochastic Modelling ofVolcanic Processes and Hazard: an Initial Training Network for the nextgeneration of European Volcanologists” (www.nemoh-itn.eu).
The goal of the project is to develop and toimplement a highly efficient parallelized code for modelling atmospherictransport of volcanic ash and aerosols at scales from regional to global.Research objectives include: i) forecasting of ash dispersal using ensemblestrategies for eruption source parameters and quasi real time dataassimilation, ii) evaluation of volcanic ash hazard and, iii) study feedbackeffects between fine volcanic ash and aerosols and atmosphere. The successful candidate will work for three years (January 2013 – December 2015) at the Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (CASE) Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS, www.bsc.es).
Background in atmospheric sciences, numerical modelling and physical volcanology and a Master degree will be strongly considered. The candidates must meet the following requisites: 1) any nationality, but not having resided or carried out their main activity (job or studies) in Spain for more than 1 year in the past 3 years; 2) no more than 4 years may have passed since completion of the degree that in their country gives access to a PhD; 3) not having completed a PhD.
