Dear Colleagues,

We would like to call your attention to the session we are organizing for the Fall AGU meeting, focusing on the importance of phase equilibria to the evolution of silicic systems:

V038: Quartz, Two Feldspars, and a Fluid Phase: Phase Equilibrium and the Origin, Evolution and Eruptive Dynamics of Silicic Magmas” (see description below, or online at: http://tinyurl.com/btqgntb)

We hope to attract people with diverse backgrounds and approaches (e.g. experimental, computational, field-based) that can highlight the interplay between phase equilibria and silicic magma evolution.

Please consider submitting to the session. And don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions. The deadline for submission is next Wednesday, Aug 8, 23:59 US Eastern time (to submit, go to: http://agu-fm12.abstractcentral.com/).

Best,

Guil Gualda and Mark Ghiorso

V038: Quartz, Two Feldspars, and a Fluid Phase: Phase Equilibrium and the Origin, Evolution and Eruptive Dynamics of Silicic Magmas

"The chemical properties and physical state of silica-rich magma bodies are strongly influenced by the near invariant (or eutectoid) character of these systems. Critical magma properties such as viscosity, density and compressibility change dramatically after saturation in quartz, two feldspars and a fluid phase. Analysis of natural materials, experimental data, and numerical models shed light on the longevity, physical state, and eruptibility of silica-rich magmas. This session will bring together field observers, experimentalists and modelers to explore the critical connection between phase relations, magmatic evolution and the eruptive potential of silicic magmas."

Invited presenters:
Becky Lange, University of Michigan
Tom Sisson, USGS

Conveners:
Mark S Ghiorso, OFM Research, ghiorso@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Guilherme A R Gualda, Vanderbilt University, g.gualda@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
