Volcanologist

 

The Icelandic Meteorological Office seeks to employ a volcanologist

 

 

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) is a public institution, belonging to the Ministry for the Environment. The institution employs 130 staff with various educational backgrounds and skills covering many disciplines. Additionally, 120 people assist with observational and surveillance work around the country. Monitoring and research at IMO encompasses four areas: air, water, snow and glaciers and earth and oceans. The role of the institution is to accumulate, process and preserve data, as well as communicating findings and warnings. The office comprises four divisions: Warnings and Forecasting, Observation, Processing and Research and Finance and Administration. The position belongs to the division of Warnings and Forecasting, which is responsible for analysing real-time monitoring data and issuing forecasts and warnings due to natural hazards. Real-time monitoring includes surveillance of earth hazards, meteorological hazards, hydrological hazards, avalanches and oceanic floods. Furthermore the division provides weather services to international aviation within the Icelandic aviation control area.

 

Field of work:

 

·         A leading role in projects and research related to volcano monitoring

·         Development and construction of monitoring and forecasting techniques for volcanic hazards.

·         A contact for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the London Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) and other stakeholders about issues related to volcanoes

·         Development of hazard zonation maps for Icelandic volcanoes

·         Involvement in risk assessments due to volcanic eruptions in Iceland

·         Communication with local and foreign volcanologists

·         Participation in IMO’s earth-hazard monitoring team
