A fully funded PhD is available on the "Origin, timing and emplacement dynamics of huge submarine landslides around Montserrat: insights from the first ever drilling of volcanic island landslides".

The PhD student will be involved in the analysis of recently collected drill cores from around Montserrat collected in March-April 2012 by International Ocean Drilling Project Leg 340. These IODP cores are complemented by comprehensive 2-d seismic data, the first 3-d seismic data set for this type of mass flow deposit, and an unusually extensive set of shallow piston cores. The IODP drill cores provide a record of eruptions that go back to 4.5 Ma.

For suitable applicants, the PhD project can also involve a significant component of on land mapping, in collaboration with the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, to understand the earlier stages of volcanic island evolution.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a major international project, and the analysis of a seminal field data set. Full funding is available for this project to all EU nationals.

The PhD is based at the National Oceanography Centre at Southampton and supervised by Dr Peter Talling, Dr Sebastian Watt and Prof Martin Palmer. It would start in autumn 2012. A full project outline is at http://www.noc.soton.ac.uk/soes/projects/system.php?mode=showproject&project=762 , or email Peter.Talling@xxxxxxxxx or Sebastian.Watt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx for further details.
