Visiting Assistant Professor Position in Mineralogy

The Department of Geological Sciences at Michigan State University invites applications for a one-year full-time position as Visiting Assistant Professor beginning August 2012. Expected salary range is $40,000 to $50,000.  Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate mineralogy, coordinating lab sections of mineralogy, and teaching introductory geoscience or general science courses. Expected work load would be either 1) two courses per semester, or 2) one course per semester plus geochemical laboratory management duties (including maintenance, operation, and training/supervision of internal users on a Perkin Elmer Nexion ICPMS, Photon Machines Excimer laser, and Bruker XRF). Lab teaching may also be required. Opportunities exist to engage in research and collaborate with faculty in the Department and to raise extra-mural funding.

The department offers programs leading to the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Geological Sciences and Environmental Geosciences.  There are currently 15 faculty members, whose research and teaching interests are described on our web site at http://www.glg.msu.edu/index.php.  Facilities include an array of analytical instruments (e.g., SEM, AFM, XRD, XRF, ion chromatograph, ICP-MS with laser ablation), thin section laboratory and field equipment.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. (or ABD status) in geosciences or related field at the time of appointment. Preferred candidates will have experience teaching mineralogy or mineralogy lab and will be familiar with cutting-edge approaches to instruction. For the laboratory management option, the candidate must be familiar with operation of ICPMS and data reduction. A background in laser ablation is desirable but not essential.

Applicants must electronically submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching experience and capabilities in the areas desired, and a list of at least three references to:  David Hyndman, Chair, Department of Geological Sciences, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824.  Review of applications will begin June 1, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled. MSU is an AA/EEO Institution, committed to global concerns, and member of AAU that values diversity.
