Dear Colleagues,

A 3-year MNRT-funded (French Government) studentship is available at the Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans (ISTO), Orléans University in France, studying the ' Transition between explosive and effusive volcanic eruptions: In-situ magma permeability measurements'. The project is supervised by Caroline Martel. The project aims at determining the gas percolation threshold and the permeability evolution of silica-rich melts during decompression (when gas bubbles grow) or deformation (when gas bubbles deform), using a high-pressure and high-temperature deformation press of Paterson type equipped with two porosimeters and X-ray microtomography to characterize the pore network. The project is both, scientifically challenging since permeability controls the explosive potential of an erupting magma and technically challenging since no dynamic permeability measurements have been performed so far under realistic magma conditions.

We seek for a highly-motivated student (any nationalities) with a Master degree in earth science (geophysics, physics, volcanology) or related subjects. ISTO is a dynamic and stimulating working environment with a long expertise in high pressure and high temperature experimentation, equipped with dedicated facilities for the study of magma processes. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with members of the MeMoVolc European Networking (PI T. Druitt) and the working group on Merapi Volcano (PI J.-P. Métaxian).

The closing date for application is 21 May 2012 and the start date of the project is October 2012.  Please note that the pre-selected candidate will have to go for a 10-min audition on 29 May 2012 (skype is possible for non french residents). Further details of the project and the application process can be found in french at: http://www.ecole-doctorale552.cnrs-orleans.fr. Potential candidates should send a CV, a motivation letter,  a letter of recommendation, and any marks/grades/ranking reports for the academic degrees, before 14 May to Caroline Martel at cmartel@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Kind regards,
Caroline Martel --
