FOURTH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON COLLAPSE CALDERAS

SEPTEMBER 23-29, 2012, VULSINI CALDERAS, ITALY

*** Abstract submission deadline: April 30, 2012 ***
***Early-bird registration deadline: April 30, 2012 ***

*What is the Workshop on Collapse Calderas?

The IAVCEI Collapse Calderas Commission (CCC; http://www.gvb-csic.es/CCC.htm) was created in 2008 to have a wider and deeper understanding on calderas. It includes caldera geology, geodesy and geophysics, modelling, magma chamber processes, volcanic hazard and risk management, economic benefits and environmental research. CCC promotes interdisciplinary interaction to help solve the many questions regarding the formation, evolution and affect on society of collapse calderas. Previous meetings were held at Tenerife, Canarias, (2005), Mexican Volcanic Belt (2008) and Reunion (2010).

*Venue
The 4th Workshop on Collapse Calderas is scheduled for September 23-29, 2012, at Hotel Royal in Bolsena, Central Italy. Bolsena is a medieval village on the edge of Bolsena Caldera, that is the most distinctive feature of the Vulsini Calderas District, 100 km north of Rome. The Vulsini District is a worldwide famous type-locality, where many fundamental concepts on the eruptive dynamics, particularly those related to caldera-forming events, have been proposed.

*Workshop outline
The workshop is devoted at understanding the different aspects related to calderas, including the structure and development, erupted products and eruptive history, unrest episodes, magmatic processes, geodetic, geophysical and geochemical signature, mathematical and analogue models, as well as the related economic and environmental research. The workshop includes 2 days of scientific meeting, with oral and poster sessions, and 3 days of field trip at Bolsena, Latera and Vico calderas.

The scientific meeting is based on 5 sessions; each session includes, but is not restricted to, several first-order topics, on which the workshop is expected to provide constraints:
1) Caldera context and structure
2) Caldera formation and evolution
3) Caldera deposits
4) Caldera magmatic processes
5) Caldera unrest

Each session is introduced by a keynote lecture, followed by selected oral presentations, shorter posters presentations and a final discussion of the state of the art.
The field trips at Bolsena, Latera and Vico calderas are devoted at illustrating their structure, eruptive products and relationships, with the participation of distinguished volcanologists who have been working in the area, including: Bruno Capaccioni (University of Bologna), Ray Cas (Monash University, Australia) Raffaello Cioni (University of Cagliari), Donatella de Rita (University Roma Tre), Mario Gaeta (University La Sapienza Roma), Guido Giordano (University Roma Tre), Patrizia Landi (INGV Pisa), Giovanni Nappi (University of Urbino), Danilo M. Palladino (University La Sapienza Roma), Alberto Renzulli (University of Urbino), Mauro Rosi (University of Pisa), Raffaello Trigila (University La Sapienza Roma) and Luigina Vezzoli (University Insubria, Como).
Thematic informal discussions are planned in the evenings.

*Costs

The fee for participants to the workshop is 730 euros. It includes transportation from Rome to Bolsena (on the 23rd) and from Bolsena to Roma (on the 29th), all meals and accommodation in double rooms from the evening of the 23rd to the morning of the 29th (6 nights), the ice-breaker party, 3 days of excursions, the registration to the meeting, the abstract volume and the field-trip guidebook. Limited financial support is available for young scientists motivating their request in a letter when submitting the abstract (to: acocella@xxxxxxxxxxx).

* Deadlines
The workshop is limited to 60 participants, with a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend to register as soon as possible, and not to wait for the deadline, to assure your participation to this event.
- Deadline for financial support request for young researchers: March 20, 2012.
- Abstract submission deadline: April 30, 2012.
- Registration deadline: April 30, 2012.
- Registration between May 1 and July 31 will cost 800 euros.
- Registration after July 31 will not be possible. No onsite registration is foreseen.
