Experimental Volcanology Researcher/PhD

One fully funded Early Stage Researcher position is available at Lancaster University that includes registration for a PhD degree. This project is funded through the European Union with an annual salary in the range £35,000 to £37,000 for living expenses and mobility. The application deadline is 15th June 2012, with an anticipated start date of 1st November 2012. Applications are welcomed from all nationalities.

The aim of this project is to improve our understanding of seismic and acoustic signals created by gas transport in magmatic systems, with particular emphasis on strombolian systems. The project will provide fluid-dynamic insights into the sub-surface source processes responsible, building on previous work by considering the effect of conduit geometry and inclination, combined with rheological heterogeneities. The ascent of gas through magma will be explored by analogue laboratory experiments where large, individual bubbles rise through a range of liquids including water, oils and silicone compounds. Measurements will include fluid pressures in and above the liquid and the dynamic forces imparted on the apparatus. The fluid dynamics will be modelled using computational fluid dynamics software enabling the results of the experiments to be scaled up to magmatic systems. Coupling of fluid flow to ground and atmospheric motion will be carried out during secondments to other insti
 tutions.
