MINSC is a European FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) that addresses the current and future challenges of mineral scale formation. The research themes of MINSC relate to the mechanisms of nucleation, growth and inhibition of mineral scale formation through experimental and field projects.
MINSC brings together experts from 6 Universities and 5 Industry partners across Europe to provide state-of-the-art training in mineral scale research to Early Stage Researchers (ESR) and Experienced Researchers (ER). The research and training will be carried out as 13 parallel but complementary projects (see Opportunities website for details) that will address mineral scale formation aspects at three levels: the molecular, the macroscopic and the field level: more info http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/minsc/index.htm
Our Project for ESR 10 falls in teh field level : In situ monitoring station for silica scale formation.
The prime aim of this project is the testing and implementation of a multi-branch sensor station able to measure the concentration of CO2 in the gases dissolved in ground- and geothermal waters and its full integration in industrial or environmental monitoring applications. ESR10 will be trained by and work closely with WestSystems experts in developing instruments for continuous environmental monitoring and will be involved in testing and modifying the device via a series of sequential laboratory – field implementation stages, followed by real-world tests during deployment in geothermal areas in Iceland. As part of the training, there will be opportunities to go on research secondments and visits to any of the MINSC partners, but primarily to Reykjavik Energy to be trained in geothermal energy issues and University of Iceland to gain necessary geochemical knowledge. A chemistry background is required; more info : http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/minsc/project_descriptions.htm
