Call for Abstracts

The joint IAVCEI-IACS Commission on Volcano-Ice Interactions Third International Conference on Volcano-Ice Interactions on Earth & Other Planets will be held in Anchorage, Alaska, June 18–22, 2012. We are planning a three-day oral and poster session meeting format followed by two days for field excursions to the Wrangell volcanic field and the Kenai Peninsula. The conference precedes the International Glaciological Society symposium on mountain glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets in a warming climate that will be held in Fairbanks the following week from June 25–29.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together scientists with a common interest in volcano-ice interactions and to highlight recent studies and eruptions at snow- and ice-clad volcanoes. We are particularly interested in encouraging students and post-docs to attend and present their research results.

An extended abstract (at least one but no more than two full pages) should reach the Organizing Committee no later than February 29th 2012. Abstracts should include the full title of the paper, names, affiliations of all authors, email addresses and full mailing addresses of all the authors, the suggested session and the requested mode of presentation (oral or poster).

The abstract must clearly describe the content of the presentation and its basis (detailed case study, preliminary research data, completed research not presented previously, review of literature, etc).

The lead author should be clearly indicated. Each lead author may submit by e-mail no more than one abstract; the Organizing Committee will consider the lead author as corresponding author, unless otherwise indicated.

Please note that the Organizing Secretariats (listed below) will confirm receipt of all abstracts. Authors not receiving an e-mail notifying receipt of their abstract should check with one of the Secretariats to ensure their abstract has been effectively received.

The official language of the VII 3 Symposium will be English. All papers must be written and presented in English. Authors are expected to attend the conference and present their papers themselves.

If sufficient interest exists, a special volume of an appropriate journal will be solicited to publish the results of the conference proceedings.

Themes for Submission

Authors are requested to submit their abstract according to one of the conference themes below:

·             Recent significant eruptions: Huila 2007-08, Redoubt 2009, Eyjafjallajökull 2010, Grimsvötn 2011, Puyehue-Cordón Caulle 2011

·             Generation, transport, erosion, sedimentology and hydraulics of jökulhlaups

·             Wet volcanic mass flows associated with eruptions at snow and ice clad volcanoes

·             Glacier-volcano dynamics associated with changing glacier ice loads, past, current, future

·             Hazards and risks at snow- and ice-clad volcanoes

·             Glacier-volcano interactions during recent eruptive activity at Aleutian arc and Andes volcanoes

·             Heat transfer mechanisms during glaciovolcanic events, lava-scale to edifice-scale

·             Paleoenvironmental studies of volcano-ice interactions, dating of glacial events and implications for ice sheets

·             Planetary volcano-ice interactions

Abstracts should be addressed to: Hugh Tuffen (h.tuffen@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx), Tracy Gregg (tgregg@xxxxxxxxxxx), or Chris Waythomas (chris@xxxxxxxx)

Please send your abstract by email as a Word file (.doc) attachment. The file should be saved using the Leading Author’s name (e.g. Smith.doc)
