PhD Position at LMU about the explosivity of gas-overpressure and vapour-explosion driven fragmentation in a volcanic system
Project Summary
Rapid fragmentation of magma may occur by several mechanisms, however some of them are to date only sparsely investigated, e.g. phreatic explosions. The core of this project is the fragmentation dynamics of steam-driven, so called phreatic explosions and the comparison of their dynamics (and generated particles) to “dry”, gas-driven volcanic explosions.
The successful candidate will mainly work experimentally, analyzing the fragmentation dynamics with respect to the presence of a superheated water phase and gain insights into the effects of external water on fragmentation behavior as well as rock mechanical properties. The project includes set-up design, characterization of the natural sample material, fragmentation experiments and their interpretation, including theoretical as well as numerical modeling of the results. The project targets a model for the efficiency of phreatic explosions, which should be discussed with respect to natural observations.
Funding
3 years funding is available from an EU-project (ITN). Funding
includes salary
based EU guideline, which is above standard PhD salary (TVL13/2)
as well as
costs for research, field work and participation on
international workshops being
part of the EU-project.
Qualifications
Applicants for this PhD project should have a strong background in thermodynamics and some background in numerical modeling, further they should enjoy experimental work. Experience in signal processing as well as petrology and volcanology are a plus.
Interested candidates are
encouraged to send a letter
of interest and a detailed CV to Dr. Bettina Scheu (b.scheu@xxxxxx). Deadline of
the application
is 08 January 2012.
