Applications are invited for a highly motivated student to undertake a NSF-funded PhD research project in modeling volatile transport in magma reservoir at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in Georgia Tech (Atlanta, GA), in collaboration with the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington (Seattle). This project include salary for 3 years, university tuition fees, and research costs, including funding to support travel to conferences.
This project will tie measurements of volatiles elements in well-characterized volcanic samples (using different techniques; e.g., apatite chemistry, melt inclusion), with thermodynamics calculations (using published thermodynamics packages) and numerical models of multiphase flow in magma reservoirs (using a range of techniques, including the Lattice-Boltzmann method).
Applicants for this PhD project should have a strong mathematical and physical background and a good knowledge in magmatic petrology. Experience in fluid dynamics and numerical modeling are a plus. They should submit their applications to the Georgia Tech graduate program (deadline 15th of January, http://www.eas.gatech.edu/academics/app-process/). Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Christian Huber (christian.huber@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx) and Olivier Bachmann (bachmano@xxxxxx) for more information.
