**************************************************************************************************

Applications are invited for two outstanding students to undertake funded PhD research projects in geochemistry based in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Canterbury (UC). These projects include a 3-year stipend of $25,000 per annum (tax free), university tuition fees, and research costs, including funding to support travel to national and international conferences. Project titles are:

Project 1: Geochemical modelling of New Zealand hydrothermal systems

As part of UC's Source to Surface programme with Mighty River Power Ltd., one PhD position is available to geochemically model hydrothermal processes occurring in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand, particularly, the temporal and spatial chemical evolution of hydrothermal fluids utilizing isotope and thermodynamic geochemistry. Applicants should have a strong background in igneous petrology, geochemistry and GIS.

Project 2: Low temperature alteration of New Zealand ultramafic rocks

A second PhD position is available to assess the alteration of ultramafic rocks in terrestrial outcrops in New Zealand. One objective of this research is to geochemically evaluate H2 and CH4 production related to low temperature serpentinization. Applicants with a strong academic record ('A' average in the final two years of study) and with a background in field and geochemical methods are ideal for this avenue of study.

Applicants for these research PhD projects should have experience in the appropriate area(s) of geosciences. The Department of Geological Sciences has a high national and international profile and has good teaching and research facilities. For more information see www.geol.canterbury.ac.nz. Applications for either project should submit a cover letter, detailed CV, an academic transcript, a letter detailing their suitability for these projects, and the names and contact details of two academic referees.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Christopher Oze (christopher.oze@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) prior to developing a complete application. The deadline for this application is 30 November 2011.

Applications should be sent to: Dr. Christopher Oze, Department of Geological Sciences, University of Canterbury, Private Bag 4800, Christchurch 8140, New Zealand.
